Vybz Kartel: The Controversial and Captivating Dancehall Icon
VYBZ KARTEL: THE CONTROVERSIAL DANCEHALL ICON
PART 2
Since his arrest in 2011, Vybz Kartel has released a lot of new music. Jamaican jail officials have denied him recording rights, and Kartel has refused to reveal the actual source of the recordings, despite the fact that the lyrics reflect current events.[55]
Kartel recorded his most globally successful album, King of the Dancehall, while in prison in 2016, and it climbed at number two on the US Billboard Reggae Charts. The track "Fever" from the album topped numerous local music charts and became his most popular on streaming services.[6]
In 2017, Kartel collaborated with Kingston Story producer Dre Skull on the tune "Real Bad Gal".
Two of his seven children, Jaheim, popularly known as Little Vybz, and Akheel Raheim Palmer, also known as Little Addi, have been releasing music as a duet known as "PG 13" (also known as "Kartel Sons") since 2014.[56] In 2019, both were featured on the "Fully Gaza" riddim on separate songs, with Likkle Vybz teaming up with father Vybz on the title track "Fully Gaza," while Likkle Addi performs solo on "Dolla Sign," which interpolates portions of the chorus from his father's single of the same name from the Goodlife riddim in 2009.[57]
In January 2020, Kartel released To Tanesha, a 10-track album devoted to his ex-girlfriend and the mother of his three children, Tanesha Johnson. They co-produced the album with their own record companies, Short Boss Muzik and Vybz Kartel Muzik.[58] On June 26, 2020, Kartel released his fifteenth studio album, Of Dons and Divas.[59] He also appears on Busta Rhymes' 2020 album, Extinction Level Event 2: The Wrath of God.
Exactly six years later, on April 3, 2020, a three-judge bench of the Jamaican Court of Appeal upheld Kartel's conviction.[60] On April 17, 2020, the Court of Appeal decreased Kartel's parole eligibility to 32 years and 6 months, citing Justice Campbell's inability to consider the singer's time in jail while awaiting trial in 2014. Kartel will be eligible for release in 2046.[61]
On March 14, 2024, the UK Privy Council overturned Kartel's conviction owing to juror misconduct. The Jamaican Court of Appeal will have to decide if a retrial will go place.[8][9]
